Powell announces ‘Community Conversation’ event on Covid-19 Data with Special Guest, Troy Fire Chief Matthew Simmons

ARCANUM — State Rep. Jena Powell (R-Arcanum) on Tuesday announced she will be hosting a community conversation event with Troy Fire Chief Matthew Simmons to discuss COVID-19 numbers and statistics. The event will be held via Facebook Live on Wednesday, August 12 at noon.

“I look forward to discussing COVID-19 with a well-respected leader in our community,” said Powell. “This community conversation will bring to light important statistics, including drug overdoses, successful treatments, studies on asymptomatic spread, and more.”

Chief Simmons has served the city of Troy in fire service for 20 years. He has pioneered multiple community outreach programs, including a heroin task force in conjunction with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office to combat the increasing epidemic. Chief Simmons is also a Navy veteran and holds certifications as a Firefighter, Paramedic, Fire Safety Inspector, and Fire and Explosive Investigator.

Rep. Powell Statement On Forge Leadership Network Scholarships

COLUMBUS – Representative Jena Powell (R-Arcanum) is offering students in District 80 scholarships to attend the Forge Leadership Summit. Rep. Powell is offering 75% scholarships to individuals in the district who are accepted into the Leadership Summit hosted by Forge Leadership Network, taking place July 21-25, 2020.

The Forge Leadership Summit is a five-day intensive filled with dynamic trainings, professional development, and renowned speakers. Accepted students represent talented conservative students and young professionals, ages 18-25, wanting to engage in politics, culture, and business.

Rep. Powell says, “This is a great opportunity for young, aspiring leaders in the 80th district to come and receive top-notch training and mentoring. Especially in today’s world, good leadership is crucial, and leaders of all ages in all sectors of the market are needed.”

Powell asks students to participate in Women’s Voting Exhibit

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Jena Powell (R-Arcanum) today encouraged students in her district to participate in Building the Movement: America’s Youth Celebrate 100 Years of Women’s Right to Vote. The Office of First Lady Melania Trump recently announced the creation of this exhibit, which will honor the centennial anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

The exhibit is set to launch this August and will showcase artwork that depicts individuals, objects, and events representing the women’s suffrage movement. The First Lady is asking young Americans in grades 3 to 12 from across the United States and its territories to submit artwork displaying this historic milestone.

One submitted artwork from each state and territory will be chosen to appear alongside images of women’s suffrage parades, marches, and gatherings that took place at or around the White House.

“This is a fantastic way for our students to learn more about the 19th Amendment and celebrate its centennial anniversary,” said Powell. “It would be an honor if a student from our community was chosen to represent Ohio in this exhibit.”

Powell Announces Facebook Live Event

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Jena Powell (R-Arcanum) today announced she will be hosting a Facebook Live event next week with special guests Matt Sharp and Aaron Baer to discuss the recent Supreme Court decisions and their impact on local communities.

“It’s important my constituents understand the full impact of the recent Supreme Court decisions and how they may influence our community,” said Powell.

Sharp is currently a lawyer with Alliance Defending Freedom, a nonprofit organization that advocates for religious liberty, the sanctity of human life, freedom of speech, and marriage and family.

Baer is currently the President of Citizens for Community Values, a nonprofit research and education organization that advocates for pro-family public policies.

Powell noted that House Bill 527, the Same Women’s Sports Act, will also be discussed.

“I look forward to having a thoughtful discussion with these knowledgeable guests,” added Powell.

ARCANUM – State Representative Jena Powell (R-Arcanum) announces she will be hosting a community conversation event with T. Elliot Gaiser to discuss regulatory and administrative law in regard to COVID-19. The event will be held tomorrow via Facebook Live.

Gaiser is an attorney from Northeast Ohio and has experience in issues related to the separation of powers, federalism, the First Amendment, and the Administrative Procedure Act. He served as a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

“I’m grateful Mr. Gaiser will share his knowledge with my constituents as we navigate through this uncertain period in our nation’s history,” said Powell.  “It’s important that we are aware of the current laws and regulations as we face this pandemic.”

BIO For T. Elliot Gaiser:
T. Elliot Gaiser received his J.D. in 2016 from the University of Chicago law school, where he was a Bradley Fellow, Vice President of University of Chicago Federalist Society, and winner of the Karl Llewelyn Memorial Cup for excellence in brief writing & oral advocacy. Before graduation, Mr. Gaiser was an extern to Judge Alice M. Batchelder on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and a clerk in the Ohio Attorney General’s Office of the Solicitor General.

Prior to law school, Mr. Gaiser worked as a Graduate Fellow for Welfare Studies covering anti-poverty programs and immigration issues at The Heritage Foundation.

Mr. Gaiser graduated magna cum laude from Hillsdale College in 2012, where he served as Opinions Editor of The Collegian, received the Edward Everett Prize in Oratory, and worked as an on-air DJ for WCSR Radio Hillsdale 92.1 FM, 1340 AM.

Mr. Gaiser was an associate at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where he focused on issues related to the separation of powers, federalism, environmental regulation, the First Amendment, and the Administrative Procedure Act. Rep. Powell Encourages Small Businesses to Provide Input to Task Force

ARCANUM – State Representative Jena Powell (R-Arcanum) is encouraging small business owners throughout her district to share their experience on how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted their operations as leaders seek to understand the full extent of the coronavirus on Ohio’s economy.

“As a member of the OHIO 2020 Economic Recovery Task Force, I’ve been having thoughtful conversations with business owners from across our state,” said Powell. “I encourage the hardworking people in Miami County and Darke County to provide their insight to the task force so their perspective is represented as we re-open Ohio as soon as possible.”

The OHIO 2020 Economic Recovery Task Force will review all submissions. Once reviewed, the task force is planning to invite owners throughout the state to participate in an upcoming virtual meeting to explain the impact in greater detail.

If you are a business owner, please consider emailing Rep80@ohiohouse.gov the following:

  • Name and location of the business
  • Number of employees
  • Years in business
  • Contact information for business owners (email, phone number)
  • Brief description of nature of the business

Additionally, businesses can submit written responses to the task force. If submitting or speaking before the task force, the panel asks businesses focus on the following points:

  • If/how they are able to operate during the coronavirus.
  • What kind of financial strains have been brought on by this? If they have been in business for many years, how has this been compared to other financial downturns?
  • What kinds of obstacles do they see ahead of them once they are able to fully open up again?
  • Any governmental roadblocks ahead that the legislature should be aware of?
  • Any ideas that they might have on protocols they believe would be helpful to return to work while maintaining a level of safety to provide confidence to their customers?

The OHIO 2020 Economic Recovery Task Force will be meeting today at 12:30pm. The meeting can be streamed live on The Ohio Channel website. In addition, Rep. Powell encourages her constituents to follow @OHTaskForce2020 on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

Community Conversations With Special Guest – FACEBOOK LIVE

2020 PRIMARY ELECTION INFORMATION

The legislature extended absentee ballot voting. Voters MUST vote by absentee and have it postmarked by April 27th, 2020. No in person voting will happen except for individuals voting with disabilities.

  • Ohioans who were eligible to vote on March 17, 2020, will be able to cast their ballot by mail. Please note mail ballots must be postmarked on or before April 27, 2020, and received by May 8.
  •  Ballots that are not returned by mail must be received by the county elections board by 7:30 p.m. on April 28.
  • In-person voting will only occur on April 28 and will only be available for individuals with disabilities who require in-person voting assistance and those who do not have a home mailing address.
  • Those Ohioans who cast their ballot early will have their vote count.
  • Voters can still obtain an absentee ballot request form by calling their county Board of Elections, visiting their website or going to VoteOhio.gov
